§ 9-106. Miscellaneous specialty mechanical technicians.

  • (a)

    Class "A"—Refrigeration Technician. The scope of work of a class "A" refrigeration technician shall include and be limited to the installation, maintenance, repair and alteration of any system of refrigeration unlimited to tons or horsepower, designed and solely intended to be used for the purpose of food and product preservation or processing, or both, which is not used or designed as a comfort system. The scope of work does not include ammonia refrigeration systems. In order for an applicant to be eligible to be certified as a class "A" refrigeration technician by the board, the applicant shall have at least six (6) years of practical experience in the category.

    (b)

    Class "B"—Refrigeration Technician. The scope of work of a class "B" refrigeration technician shall include and be limited to the installation, maintenance, repair, alteration and extension of any system of refrigeration using ammonia as a refrigerant and all appliances and appurtenances and equipment necessary and incidental thereto. In order for an applicant to be eligible to be certified as a class "B" refrigeration technician by the board, the applicant shall have at least six (6) years of practical experience in the category.

    (c)

    Warm Air Heating Technician. The scope of work of a warm air heating technician shall include and be limited to the installation, maintenance, repair and alteration of a system of warm air furnace heating and all appliances, equipment and appurtenances necessary and incidental thereto, including duct work, vents and flue connections. In order for an applicant to be eligible to be certified as a warm air heating technician by the board, the applicant shall have at least three (3) years of practical experience in the category.

    (d)

    Boiler and Piping Technician. The scope of work of a boiler and piping technician shall include and be limited to the installation, maintenance, repair and service of steam and water boilers and boiler piping, including all boiler auxiliary equipment, controls and steam-actuated machinery necessary and incidental thereto, including engines, pumps, prime movers, pressing machinery, dryer rolls, and water or steam systems of heating. In order for an applicant to be eligible to be certified as a boiler and piping technician by the board, the applicant shall have at least six (6) years of practical experience in the category.

    (e)

    Insulation Contractor. The scope of work of an insulation contractor shall include and be limited to the installation, maintenance, repair, alteration and extension of any insulation primarily installed to prevent loss or gain of heat from internal or external sources in pipes, vessels, ducts or in built-up refrigerated boxes or rooms, including the application of protective coatings necessary and incidental thereto. In order for an applicant to be eligible to be certified as an insulation technician contractor by the board, the applicant shall have at least three (3) years of practical experience in the category.

    (f)

    Mechanical Maintenance Technician. The scope of work of a mechanical maintenance technician shall include and be limited to the maintenance of mechanical installations. The scope of work of a mechanical maintenance technician shall be confined to the repairing, maintaining and servicing of existing systems involving air conditioning, refrigeration, heating, ventilation and pressure and process piping contained and used upon the premises or building owned, occupied or otherwise controlled by the person, firm or corporation by whom the mechanical maintenance technician is regularly employed. A certified journeyman mechanical technician may perform the work of a mechanical maintenance technician.

    (g)

    Certification of Previously Certified Technicians. No person not previously certified as a class "A" refrigeration technician, class "B" refrigeration technician, warm air heating technician, boiler and piping technician, or mechanical maintenance technician, on September 1, 1990, shall be certified. The board shall continue to license and regulate those persons who were previously certified.

    (h)

    Additional Categories. The board shall have the power and authority to establish, create and abolish, by resolution of the board, such additional specialty mechanical categories, classes and levels of certification as it may deem necessary.
